AUDIENCE RESEARCH FOCUS GROUP:

My focus group I set up was on Facebook and consisted of four different people, I put the moodboard on Facebook as an uploaded picture and asked various people of both genders questions on what the audience I should look to target is. Problems i had was that many people were reluctant to put the effort in to help, and also I struggled to find people of different ages and had to settle for people of my age which demonstrated problems to get large and wide results.
The people that where in my focus group where:

Georgia Chandler

Age - 19
Gender - Female
Education - Bromsgrove

Jasmine Mckeown

Age - 17
Gender - Female
Education - Worcester Sixth Form

Alex Clark

Age - 17
Gender - Male
Education - Worcester Sixth Form
Sam Rolinson

Age - 20
Gender - Male
Education - Birmingham University

TARGET AUDIENCE

The target audience we are currently trying to entertain is that of demographic profile of ages from 17-27 of the more intelligent classes as the genre needs to be interpreted in order to be understood therefore for the context to be registered our target audience. Despite saying this I think it would attract a young target audience do to the theme of murder and prostitution but also due to that fact with will have young characters. The film will be predominately aimed at boys, although my group disagrees and believe it will be targeted at both genders. Using the JICNAR scale I have targeted the social grade of A, B, C1 with a Psycho-graphic group of individualists.

FILM OPENINGS – GENRE SPECIFIC ANALYSIS

For research into film openings I looked at two films in which i could base the film around, this where both noir films one which was quite old fashioned and one which is quite new, the first of these films is The Last Seduction and the second being Brick. The where obviously the same specific genre as the film I am looking to do. Brick is a newer film in comparison to The last seduction, so therefore I concentrated more on that then the other one.
The film The Last Seduction and the start has a title sequence where the actors and company producers are displayed this is about a minute long with a dark background and white writing as the titles, this is accomplished with digetic music in the background. The film cuts into the narrative as a shot of a demon stone statue overlooking a city, which i believe is new york, the digetic background music is carried on into the narrative of the start of the music this is a typical start of a noir film. During the introduction the staff behind the film are shown in the bottom left in white type. It then cuts to a scene in an office, with a woman giving the order this being a emergent idea which is also typical of a noir film. The woman is first at mysterious to her as at first you can not see her face as it is blocked and then she comes into the light to be able to see her face. She speaks with a powerful and commanding voice, and takes control of other men in the room. There is then a a cutaway to a man with  briefcase, making what seems to be a deal of drugs for cash. Then it is cut back away to the woman and another emergent idea of her being in control with cash. The man then looks to be ripped of and the two man with the gun are powerful over him which is another residual idea showing that noir films are based of digetic music with emergent and residual ideas.

The second film we looked at was Brick for a specific analysis, this is a much newer film which was produced in 2005 so you would expect there to be more emergent ideas. The opening scene of this film attracts the attention of the viewers really quickly as it introduces a character, and begins telling the story. It is clear that he has just killed the girl on the floor as he on the floor next to the girl staring at her. It introduces the themes in the film as quite dark and has a 'noir' feeling about it. This film is aimed at a younger audience than most in this style of film. You can tell this is aimed at teenagers as the main characters in it are at college which would attract more people the same age.

FIRST IDEAS

In my group of 3, Amy Gwynn, Joanne Paige we have a range of ideas for my first ideas, I'm reasonably certain that the genre i will be attempting is that of a noir genre, after disussing a range of other genre such as horror, action and murder. From this point I do not know what sort of individual film types I will have inside of the noir background, I put forward to the group the idea of a murder mystery and of a general noir film type of prostution therefore the idea was put forward to combine the ideas into a sort of murder prostution film with a noir murder genre. We decided  on the nir film type due to the different ideas we could follow by using this and also the fact it is not a regular genre so therefore it will be different from other films.
The genre will problem come with an age and a target age of the older population so probably of ages from 15+ do to the themes and idea that will be in the film. Apart from that this genre is really targeted any ages of the 15 age mark and to either sex's. The narrative of the film will be a dark and spooky mood and tone with a quite street and deserted areas in which the murder takes place, and the film will then develop to find the murder so the characters will develop alongside this to find the killer.

FROM CONCEPT TO SCREEN – DEXTER

The idea of this clip is taken from something that seems like an everyday thing but has another meaning when looked at in detail. This is of a normal morning but the extreme close ups and shallow depth of fields shows an element of violence.
The title 'Dexter' is shown normal side up and then flipped so the letters are up-side down which reflects the character Dexter in the way that it seems the same as we read it before but something is wrong when it changes. It means the same and at a first glance we don't notice anything wrong until we look a bit closer and realise something is wrong. This is also shown in the cinematography as it would seem like a normal routine if the camera was further away like a normal shot. This idea is also shown through the image below of a window frame. This seems like a normal photo of a window, however, at a closer look you discover that it is the window that Martin Luther King was shot from. This suddenly makes this picture very sinister and dark, making it feel like there is something wrong with it.
In this extreme close up of him breaking the egg, it gives the idea of it being a violent act. The shallow depth of field also gives this idea as you see the detail of the shell breaking away into pieces and the egg splashing outwards. It has been slowed down to exaggerate this idea.

The quick editing and jump cuts of him eating his breakfast emphasises the violence within this every day activity. The way he tears his food apart could be seen in a murderous way when shown close up, however if this was a normal shot, we wouldn't think twice about it. Their are two versions of this short clip, the first one we watched had a piece of music that matched with the darkness of the camera shots. The music was intense reflect this idea, however in the second one, the music was a lot more upbeat, making it seem happier and allowing us to look deeper into the camera shots. This juxtaposition has reflected the idea of the title in the way that it seems like nothing is wrong until you look closer.

RESEARCH: KEY CONVENTIONS

Next we looked at the key conventions of the following films Searching For a Midnight Kiss, Brick, London to Brighton, Shifty, Kick Ass.

What all films had in common is that before there was any screen time for any of the actors the sponsors of the film and the production companies of the film are all displayed.
The scene setting then takes place and this is sets the narrative for the film. On London to Brighton there also also time setting, and may be a narrative back in time as shown in brick.
On the majority of films there is the titles where the actors of the films names                           are displayed in small text overlaying the scene setting of the title sequence. The genre of the films and the themes are all shown right at the start of the film and are made very clear in the title sequence through various enigma codes. In London To Brighton there is louder music to title then in the narrative of the film to show the beginning of the actual film. In the film in search of a midnight kiss there is a narrative of flashbacks into time. The film Brick was shown in a noire type of filming and the narrative was back in time. The last film we looked at, Kickass had narration in the background with a digetic background as into brought you into the film the background digetic music cut out and the film went into the narrative.

MAIN TASK

The main task of the production is to create research and planning of the title sequences in films, we therefore would create a two minute maximum introduction sequence for a fiction film and then evaluate the opening scene that we have created, all the video and audio material had to be that of our own and completely original.

The deadlines for the production is:

Research Deadline : 26/11/10

Photo-storyboard deadline: 3/12/10

Filming deadline: 07/01/11

Production deadline: 28/01/11

Evaluation deadline: 11/02/11
