The characters we see in the opening sequences are generally the main character. There is a general belief behind noir characters of mystery, and they on a large amount of the time are smoking.
The mise en scene which dominates is the general idea of wearing suits with top hats, with smoking being largely popular. In the Noir genre I have seen that the lighting is very important because it creates the dramatic effects within the film, and it is largely like in noir for the film to be in black and white, this is where the word noir has come for as a genre topic as 'noir' in French is black.
